Seven years too long — Refugees speak out
Refugee rights protests were held in Sydney on July 19, as part of a national day of action, to mark seven years since the then-Kevin Rudd Labor government sent the first refugees to offshore detention on Manus Island and Nauru. The Rudd government was also the first to implement a policy that no one who arrives via boat to seek asylum would be resettled in Australia.

Refugee rights activists rallied in Sydney on July 20 calling on the government to close the camps and evacuate Manus Island and Nauru. July 19 marked six years of torture for many people in offshore detention.
Palm Sunday rally for refugee rights
Hundreds of people rallied in Perth at the Palm Sunday Justice for Refugees march on April 14. There was a strong contingent of medical students under the banner "detention harms health" and the names of people who have died as a result of the detention system since 2012 were read out.
